Day2: Vocab Skills & Follow up

Introduction to Studying Vocabulary  + Diagnostic Follow-up

Pair Discussion  (10 min.)
  • What do you need to do to succeed in a university course?
  • Why is attaining a high level of vocabulary important?
  • How do you study and learn new vocabulary? What do you think are the best methods or ways to learn more words?

Learning Vocabulary  - So many ways!

  •   Flashcards (paper flashcards, or Quizlet etc.)
  •   Vocabulary lists
  •  Memory methods – mnemonics
    (something that helps people
     remember something)
  •  Pictionary or typography – draw pictures

Attaining a high level of vocabulary
  •  Read a lot
    •  What should you read?
    •  Self-selected materials (what interests you)
  •  Understand word categories
    •  Can you name some different word categories?
    •  p.6 GAV, Discipline Specific, Proverbs, Slangs, Euphemisms, Phrasal verbs …..
    • Which ones are academic?
  •  Learn morphemes: roots, prefixes, suffixes
  •  Guess the meaning of words from context
    •  What happens if you look up every word in a dictionary?
    •  Reading speed slows down and comprehension suffers.

Reflection:
For pair work, Read and Run activity might be necessary since students in the beginning of the semester are still shy with classmates.
I will have observers .... for every single class from next week. I am feeling nervous.

I had several emails for asking questions about emails.
I thought I was good at managing class tools and housekeeping, but with different mediation/technology, things get complicated.

Day4: Note-taking, flashcards, and part of speech

- Because of the snow day, we met after one week. then, I just wanted to make them to be more active, so I  made sudden changes at the last minute -- just before the class. - thought the group work (corner discussion) would work like an icebreaker, but somehow, things got complicated. they are not familiar with one another yet. - Brazilian teachers are more advanced then other students, which created a different dynamic. There were some quiet students who did not talk that much. - Was still too conscious of my unstable non-native like awkward english expressions sometimes. - Covered most of the things that I planned - but still not sure how much students could have learned.  --- > some classroom assessment techniques are necessary. - Vocabulary quiz will be Jan 30th. Test-taking strategies will be discussed later on the course; then this vocab test will serve as how students are familiar with test formats, and also about myself becoming better at using the ques...
